FEATURE STORY:
The Castles and Historical Sites of Harry Potter
The magical world of the young apprentice wizard Harry Potter provides the perfect introduction to the history and beauty of Britain. The Harry Potter books have been devoured by youngsters (and more than a few adults!) around the world, and the arrival of the film version of Harry Potter and the
Sorcerer's Stone helps bring to life the strange and wonderful locations, people and creatures in Harry's world. That world is filled with ghosts, giants and monsters; he travels by steam train to his new school from an invisible train platform, and at his massive, rambling school there are hidden passageways, stairs that shift around and portraits that just won't sit still - it is a world that enjoyably reflects the myths and legends of Britain.
Alnwick Castle
Alnwick, Northumberland
This mighty fortress is the second largest inhabited castle in England (the first being Windsor Castle), and has been home of the Percys, Earls and Dukes of Northumberland, since 1309. It has regularly featured in film and television productions over the years, and was seen recently in Elizabeth and Robin
Hood Prince of Thieves. The castle grounds are used as the location for some of Hogwarts' exteriors.

Bodleian Library
Oxford
The historic Bodleian Library is the main research library of Oxford University, with the central buildings including Duke Humfrey's Library above the Divinity School, the Old Schools Quadrangle and the Clarendon Building. Both the Duke Humfrey's Library and the Divinity School are used to recreate some of the interiors at Hogwarts.

Christ Church
Oxford
Christ Church' and its Great Hall is used as a double for Hogwarts School. Oxford's largest college, re-founded by Henry VIII in 1546, is the only college in the world with a cathedral within its walls. Lewis Carroll (Charles Dodgson), author of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland, used the same views at Christ Church as inspiration for his world famous story.

King's Cross Station
London
This central London station was bulk as the Great Northern Railway's London terminus in 1851-2, and features a central 120ft high clock tower in Italianate style. The station was used to film the departure of the young first year wizards as they gather on Platform 9 3/4, ready to board the Hogwarts Express bound for their new school, Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry.

London Zoo
London
Set on the edge of Regent's Park, historic London Zoo is home to more than 600 species of rare and beautiful animals, ranging from tigers and elephants to penguins and piranhas. It is in the reptile house though, which features in both JK Rowling's first book and the film, that young Harry first learns of his ability to talk to snakes which proves quite useful as the story develops.
